About Us

Batador.com is a collective of professional musicians who play bass and/or drums. This blog is a place where we share no-bullshit tips on how to play, gig, and take care of your instrument. We are not cork-sniffers or gear collectors or Tone Attorneys, so don’t expect to find us rhapsodizing about gear no gigging musician can afford. Part of our mission is to find the least painful path to gear that excites us.

Also, we’re all touring and session players, so while we all agree, for example, that the old school Ampeg SVT head and 8×10″ sound AMAZING, we’re a little reluctant to recommend that anyone haul one of those monsters around the country (or even across town). We believe in bringing exactly the right gear to the gig. We’re here to pass that information on to you.

However, we are all obsessives, so don’t be surprised to find out that one of use spent 7 hours polishing chrome on an old Ludwig kit or that another of us drove nine hours to play a gig for nobody just so we could have the experience. We each have a story to tell that is the product of our experiences and we hope you find this weblog informative or infuriating or hilarious.

The players are:

Ryan Monahan – Multi-instrumentalist | Vocalist | Songwriter: Ryan studied music technology and jazz at the Harrt School of Music and earned his B.S. in Music Business from C.C.S.U, where he performed in numerous orchestras, and jazz ensembles. After finding a home in Athens, Ga, Monahan wrote for local entertainment weekly, Flagpole, before recording his debut record. Monahan has had several songs licensed for film and television, and is currently writing more solo material for an upcoming release. He has had the opportunity to perform on stage with Cindy Wilson of the B-52s under the moniker “Ola Moon”, as well as seasoned punk outfit Five Eight. Monahan currently writes/tours with Easter Island [bass, b.vox], whose debut LP was featured in Paste Magazine, and Magnet Magazine among others.

Currently Listening To: Tycho, Sigur Rós, Atoms for Peace, The Notwist, Midlake, Atlas Sound, The Blue Nile, Fleetwood Mac, Kanye West, Mahler.

Lemuel Hayes- Drummer | Instructor | Time Lord: Lemuel, like a great deal of drummers, started playing drums young. It started with pencils and spoons as a child and then a toy drum set one Christmas. It lasted all of two days, but it was an awesome two days. Lemuel has also played in musicals in the Hall county area including productions at The Holly Theatre, Gainesville High, and North Hall High. After being introduced to Cindy Wilson of The B52’s, Lemuel backed the Queen of Kitsch and her long-time musical friend Dana Downs for a stellar set for REM’s 30th Anniversary celebration and a performance at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta under the moniker “Ola Moon.”

These days, whenever he’s not slingin’ swingin’ tunes with Wayde Powell, providing a lush rhythmic texture with Monahan, or showing padawans of percussion the path, Lemuel is lending his skills live, on tape and in the pit. With a full plate of drumming in front of him, playing never tasted so good.

Patrick Ferguson- Drummer | Recording Engineer | Drum Tech: Patrick has over 20 years experience as a touring drummer and session player. He’s traveled the world with bands such as The Psychedelic Furs, The Low Lows, Five Eight and Easter Island. He is also a recording engineer and drum tech. He is an avid drum-restorer but hates the “does-it-have-original-tension-rods?” crowd. If his world fell apart and he had to sell everything, he’d sell his 3-ply Ludwigs last.
